THE BOULANGERIE NEAR OUR PARIS APARTMENT was filled each morning with the luscious aroma of fresh baked goods. I chose a couple of treats and ordered two cafés au lait to take back for the start of our day. In the dawn light, the sidewalks bustled with people on their way to catch the Metro for work or school and commuters in cars, on motorbikes and riding bicycles sped along the streets.

After a day of sightseeing, we would rest on the living room couch with a beverage retrieved from the fridge, then choose from any number of local eating places, with décor, prices and menus to suit any taste or budget. Or we could pick up fresh ingredients at nearby markets and whip up our own meal in the fully equipped kitchen.
